Despite her success in gymnastics, Zamarripa maintained the life of a normal teenager. John Zamarripa said it was Shannon Miller, the most decorated U.S. gymnast with 16 World Championships and Olympic medals between 1991 and 1996, who told him that it was best for his daughter to stay in public school instead of being home-schooled. "I think her advice kind of helped steer things there," John Zamarripa said. "At the time you just don't know what the right thing is. She kind of advised that with school you can't repeat that part over."
